Depois dum primeiro álbum de puro trip-hop, a banda de Londres trouxe uma amálgama de géneros e instrumentos musicais para este segundo disco, misturando o trip-hop com reggae, lounge, electrónica e outros estilos musicais – em que até ragas indianas entram no repertório –  aliados a letras intimistas, mas de certa forma inquietantes e sempre rondando o tema da posição do indivíduo no espaço duma relação, duma sociedade, do universo. Medos, esperanças, melancolias e estados de espírito, numa toada morna de sons ricos e suaves em que a voz sensual de Skye Edwards é encantadoramente hipnótica.

É um desfilar de estilos maduro e sofisticado em que a fusão e a produção ganham relevo, pelos detalhes esmerados que apresentam, contrastando brutalmente com o facto de quase todas as faixas terem sido escritas em cinco minutos cada, depois de uma noite de copos – segundo os próprios, os irmãos Paul e Ross Godfrey, este álbum foi totalmente concebido e quase todo escrito no dia de Natal de 1995, um ano antes do lançamento do seu primeiro “Who Can You Trust”.

A canção que dá o nome ao álbum, “Big Calm”, teve a participação especial do rapper Jason Furlow e de DJ Swamp, o DJ que acompanhava Beck. Esta música deu-lhes tanta satisfação na produção, que não hesitaram em escolhê-la para nome do álbum. No entanto, temas como “The Sea”, “Part of the Process” ou “Blindfold” são emblemáticas da grande riqueza musical que é este disco. 

Quase trinta anos depois, este ainda é considerado um dos melhores discos de sempre.   

After a first album of pure trip-hop, the London band brought an amalgamation of genres and musical instruments to this second album, mixing trip-hop with reggae, lounge, electronica and other musical styles – in which even Indian ragas come into play. And they combine this repertoire with lyrics that are intimate but in a way unsettling and always addressing the theme of the individual’s position in the space of a relationship, a society, the universe, singing about  fears, hopes, melancholy and moods, in a warm tone of rich and soft sounds in which Skye Edwards’ sensual voice is enchantingly hypnotic.

This is a parade of mature and sophisticated styles in which fusion and production gain prominence, due to the careful details they present, brutally contrasting with the fact that almost all the tracks were written in five minutes each, after a night of drinking – according to themselves, brothers Paul and Ross Godfrey, this album was entirely conceived and almost entirely written on Christmas Day 1995, a year before the release of their debut “Who Can You Trust”. 

The song that gives the album its name, “Big Calm”, had the special participation of rapper Jason Furlow and DJ Swamp, the DJ who accompanied Beck. This song gave them so much satisfaction in the production, that they didn’t hesitate in choosing it for the album’s name. However, songs like “The Sea”, “Part of the Process” or “Blindfold” are emblematic of the great musical richness that this album is.  Almost thirty years later, this is still considered one of the best albums of all time.
